O’Hare and Midway Airport Car Service: Everything Chicago Travelers Should Know

Getting to or from Chicago’s two major airports — O’Hare International (ORD) and Midway International (MDW) — is one of those tasks that sounds simple until you’re standing at the curb at 5:30 AM wondering where your driver is. Or worse, watching your rideshare driver cancel for the third time during a surge.

At Royal Carriage Limousine, airport transfers are the backbone of our business. We run hundreds of them every month to both airports, and we’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and what experienced travelers in Chicago actually care about.

O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

Terminal Layout and Pickup

O’Hare has four terminals — Terminal 1 (United), Terminal 2 (Delta, Air Canada), Terminal 3 (American, Spirit), and Terminal 5 (International). When you book an airport black car service, your driver needs to know your terminal and arrival door. Terminal 5 is the most common point of confusion because it’s physically separated from Terminals 1-3.

For domestic arrivals, your driver will stage in the cell phone lot on Bessie Coleman Drive and pull to your terminal when you text that you’ve landed and have luggage. For international arrivals at Terminal 5, the driver uses the Terminal 5 arrivals curb on the lower level — not the same road as the domestic terminals.

Drive Times from Chicago Neighborhoods

These are realistic drive times, not what Google Maps says at 2 AM:

  • Loop / River North: 45-70 minutes depending on Kennedy Expressway traffic
  • Lincoln Park / Lakeview: 35-55 minutes via I-90/94
  • Hyde Park / South Loop: 50-80 minutes (the longest from the south side)
  • Evanston / North Shore: 30-45 minutes via I-94 to I-294
  • Naperville / Western Suburbs: 25-40 minutes via I-88 to I-294
  • Schaumburg / Northwest Suburbs: 15-25 minutes via I-290 or Route 53

We build in a 15-minute buffer on every O’Hare pickup. If your flight is at 7 AM domestic (arrive by 5:30 AM for TSA), we’ll have you picked up by 4:45 AM from downtown. It sounds early. It is early. But missing a flight is worse.

O’Hare Pricing

A sedan from downtown Chicago to O’Hare runs $65-$85 with a professional executive car service. That’s a flat rate — no surge, no surprises. Compare that to rideshare pricing that swings from $35 on a Tuesday afternoon to $95 during Friday evening rush hour. The professional car service price is fixed the moment you book.

Midway International Airport (MDW)

Why Midway Is Easier

Midway is one terminal. One arrivals level. One departures level. Your driver knows exactly where to go. It’s also closer to downtown — the drive from the Loop to Midway is typically 20-35 minutes via I-55, compared to 45-70 minutes to O’Hare.

Southwest Airlines dominates Midway, so if you’re flying Southwest, this is your airport. The pickup area is straightforward — exit baggage claim, cross the pedestrian bridge to the parking garage ground level, and your driver will be waiting at the commercial vehicle pickup zone.

Midway Pricing

Sedan from downtown to Midway: $55-$70 flat rate. From the western suburbs (Naperville, Downers Grove, Oak Brook): $60-$80. Again, fixed pricing. No surge.

What’s Included in Professional Airport Car Service

  • Flight tracking: We monitor your flight number. If your plane is delayed 45 minutes, we adjust the pickup time automatically. You don’t need to call or text.
  • Meet and greet option: For international arrivals or VIP pickups, your driver can meet you inside the terminal at baggage claim with a name sign. Additional fee applies, but it eliminates any confusion.
  • Wait time: 30 minutes of free wait time for domestic arrivals, 60 minutes for international. If customs takes longer than expected, we’re still there.
  • Vehicle options: Black sedan (Lincoln Continental or similar), black SUV (Escalade ESV), or Sprinter van for groups of 6-12.
  • Child car seats: Available on request at no extra charge. Let us know the age and weight of the child when booking.

Corporate Airport Accounts

If your company sends people to O’Hare or Midway regularly, a corporate account with Royal Carriage eliminates the per-trip booking hassle. Features include:

  • Consolidated monthly invoicing (no more expense reports per ride)
  • Priority booking — your rides are confirmed within minutes, not hours
  • Dedicated account manager
  • Volume pricing (10+ rides/month qualifies for reduced rates)
  • Online booking portal for your admin team

When a Rideshare Makes Sense vs. When It Doesn’t

We’re honest about this. If you’re flying solo on a Tuesday afternoon and your flight isn’t time-critical, a rideshare to O’Hare is fine. It’ll cost $35-$50 and get you there.

Where rideshares fall apart for airport runs:

  • Early morning flights (before 6 AM): Driver cancellation rates spike. We’ve had clients tell us their rideshare driver canceled three times at 4:30 AM.
  • Friday afternoon/evening: Surge pricing puts rideshares at $80-$120 — more than a professional car service with a better vehicle and guaranteed availability.
  • Groups of 3+: Two rideshares cost more than one sedan or SUV.
  • Business travel: Showing up to a client meeting after a rideshare in a Camry sends a different message than arriving in a black Escalade.
  • International arrivals: After a 10-hour flight, the last thing you want is to stand at the curb hoping your driver finds Terminal 5.

Suburban Airport Transfers

We serve the entire Chicagoland area. Some of our most frequent suburban airport routes:

  • Naperville to O’Hare: $95-$115 (sedan), 35-50 min
  • Schaumburg to O’Hare: $65-$80 (sedan), 15-25 min
  • Highland Park to O’Hare: $85-$100 (sedan), 30-45 min
  • Oak Brook to Midway: $75-$90 (sedan), 25-40 min
  • Evanston to O’Hare: $70-$85 (sedan), 25-35 min
  • Lake Forest to O’Hare: $95-$110 (sedan), 35-45 min

For wedding party airport pickups — bridesmaids flying in from different cities, for example — we coordinate multi-terminal pickups with a single vehicle or staggered vehicles depending on arrival times.
